Ferrara is a city in Emilia-Romagna, northern Italy, capital of the Province of Ferrara. A university and cultural hub with a population of about 150.000 inhabitants (and a province with about 350.000 people) with over 40.000 university students from all over Italy. It's situated 44 km (27 miles) northeast of Bologna. The urban development that took place during the Renaissance, the Herculean Addition, made it the first modern capital of Europe.
For its beauty and cultural importance, in 1995 the historical core of Ferrara has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It's one of the very few Italian province capitals to preserve the historic center completely surrounded by a circle of walls which is overall intact and almost unchanged over the centuries.
To put it simply, Ferrara is one of the most stunning cities in Europe, attracting over one million visitors each year.
